Mindfulness is the practice of purposely paying attention in the present moment without judgement (Jon Kabat-Zinn). Mindfulness is a practical skill that allows us to step back as the observer of our experience so we can take on life without the neurotic chatter of the mind. It is the ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing. When we are mindful, we appreciate everything life has to offer without being overly reactive, judgemental, or overwhelmed by what is happening around us. Mindfulness helps us to focus on the here and now, letting go of the thoughts that take us away from the present moment.
At first, mindfulness can feel difficult to do and even pointless, but similar to learning another skill, with patience and perseverance you will start to see the benefits from enhanced regulation of emotions to increased focus and attention.
Everything we feel and do relates to the state of our minds and directly affects our actions and emotions. Mindfulness and meditation will equip the young mind for potential and inevitable suffering in the future. Connecting with themselves from a young age, will empower our keiki as they learn the ins and outs of their thoughts and emotions.
An increasing amount of research and studies show the impact that mindfulness and meditation have on the brain. The evidence supporting mindfulness and it's positive impact on mind, body, and spirit illustrates the need for mindfulness practices in our lives.
